I was making my rounds of the Porterville shelter on a Tuesday morning to see which dogs we might be able to rescue. I was approached by the kennel supervisor to come and meet Manny. He was scheduled for euthanasia, but they were hoping someone might give him a chance. Manny was obviously in really bad shape. His lower jaw was misshapen from an old break and his 2 lower teeth had grown to the size of tusks. Despite this apparent handicap, Manny had a good appetite and managed to eat well, although drinking would trigger a round of sneezing. Manny's coat was a mess, full of burrs and foxtails , but despite all of this he had a heart and a spirit that was irresistible. We brought Manny into our foster program and started getting him in shape. He was neutered and vaccinated, then groomed. We take him to Petsmart every Saturday in Visalia so he can find a forever home. Sadly, some people are very unkind and each week we would hear the snickers or even the horrified gasps. The last straw for me was a couple of women who were overheard saying that he was so ugly he should have been put to sleep. At that point I decided to get a consultation to see if anything could be done. Manny and I went to see Dr. Carol Adams at Lone Oak Veterinary Hospital and the good news was that she was willing to do surgery to correct his broken jaw and overgrown teeth. The surgery was performed on 6/22 and the results are spectacular. Manny is so handsome now -- his face matches his heart. He is still looking for a forever home.
